Fort Knox of the Hill Country

It's 'dillo proof…so far.

The Trouble with Armadillos is…

they like to eat earthworms.

This isn't normally a problem, but I treated myself, and my gardens, to a big box of earthworms, Red Wigglers to be exact.  They arrived from Arkansas – which made them Razorback Red Wigglers.  I put them in the garden and happily anticipated the great improvements they'd make in my soil and composting…

But the armadillos were watching.

I have at least one family of armadillos on the property, and they have been a bit of a bother, but nothing more.  Well, two nights after I installed the earthworms, the armadillos came for dinner, and breakfast.

They destroyed my new bed of baby lettuces, and dug up all the earthworms, and generally had a feast.  Here is just one photo of the damage:

I was pretty sad for a day.

Darn those armadillos.

Garden gloves

Here’s why I have vowed to always wear gardening gloves. This grub was
the size of a big shrimp.

It’s a helpful, composting kind of grub but still, I don’t want to
touch it.photo.jpg
